The
Story of Gayde Rylock
Gayde grew up in a tiny house on the outskirts of the great
city of Britain. His father was a hunter, keeping his only child and his wife fed by
selling meats to the butcher of the town. It was a quiet life for Gayde. He never had much
interest in his father's occupation, learning very few of his old man's trade secrets. He
spent most of his time playing games with the other children of the town. His mother,
however, instilled upon him a desire to know what was going on around him. He would sit on
his mother's lap in one of Britain's famed knitting circles, listening to rumors about
this and that. Soon, Gayde became his mother's favorite little spy, using his innocent
looks to find out details of
things he, himself, did not quite understand.
Then, one day, the men of his father's usual hunting group came home to their wifes,
bloody and tired. Yet Gayde's father was not among them.
"Twas a horrible sight," said one of the hunters to Gayde's mother. "We
happened upon an Orcish party. They overwhelmed us. We started to retreat, knowing that we
could
outpace those evil creatures on foot. But your husband, I'm sorry, could not escape their
hellish mage."
Gayde's mother did not last long, after that. She soon died, only then realizing what her
husband had meant to her, pitching herself off the bridge south of Britain and drowning.
Gayde, at this point, was just old enough to be left to his own devices. Knowing that he
could not afford to keep up the family home, he sold it and used what he had for a few
meager yet grueling training sessions with a drunken fighter named Arthur, once of the
Trinsic guard. Gayde would often sit in the taverns, drinking with his fighter friend,
learning of the stories about the world. It was this that piqued Gayde's curiousity, his
desire to learn what was happening in Britannia. And this set him off on his journey,
earning money as his father once did, yearning to know what was really happening in the
world. Little did he know what he would find.
